The first chapter – “The Capital of the Russian Empire” – is made up of pictures that reflect the city’s metropolitan status, such as the imperial court, high society, government institutions and the highest bodies of state power, the diplomatic corps, visits of foreign dignitaries and state celebrations.

The second chapter – “The Working Life of the City” – includes photographs showing the daily lives of the citizens. Represented here are the St. Petersburg City Duma, the municipal authorities, police and fire services, financial and commercial institutions, public transport, water supply and sewage treatment plants, as well as many who laboured outdoors, from road workers and builders to janitors and street peddlers.

The third chapter – “The Cultural Life of the Capital” – is devoted to St. Petersburg as a great academic and spiritual centre, a city with a strong network of educational, scientific and cultural institutions, and with humanitarian traditions. The photographs included here show students and staff of various educational institutions, prominent figures in science and the arts, eminent philanthropists and patrons of the arts, as well as images of Petersburgers in their hours of leisure and rest.
